Celebrating Black History This February
February is Black History Month, the annual observance of the history of the African diaspora.
Black History has been observed in the month of February in the United States and Canada since 1976 although it originally began as Negro History Week by historian Carter G. Woodson in 1926. The origins of the celebration were rooted in the goal of educating the American people about African American history. It concentrates on the cultural backgrounds and achievements of African Americans. To celebrate Black History Month, our newsletter editor has carefully curated a list of individuals who may be often overlooked during our observances of Black History Month. Here are 14 names who you may want to learn more about during the first half of this month. Another 14 names will be shared later in the month.
